Make sure that whatever you decide, you stick with it consistently. Itâs beyond frustrating to read a manuscript that jumps back and forth between past and present in a completely haphazard way (as opposed to a deliberate switch for narrative purposes, which is A-OK).
Language
Itâs not news to you that your language informs your writing style, so choose your words carefully and keep the following hints in mind.
Vary word choice.
Remember when your high school best friend would learn a new word and then use it every five minutes? All of a sudden things werenât extraâthey were superfluous. Remember how annoying that was? Donât replicate that behavior in your writing (unless youâre making a point of establishing something about the way your character speaks).
Overuse can happen with words both distinctive and plain, and it isnât something you should worry too much about in your first draft. But when youâre doing a read-through, circle words that are used often or in close proximity to each other, and when you hit the revision stage, tinker with your sentences to avoid repetition.
